Solar Air Heating Specifications

Building-Integrated Solar Air Heating System Specification

Our solar air heating systems will provide heat at ventilation rates from 3 - 9 CFM/ft2 of with maximum efficiency achieved near 7 - 8 CFM/ft2 of collector area. For example, a 2500 ft2 wall measuring 100 x 25 ft high could be configured to provide between 7500 and 22500 CFM. A trade off is made between temperature-rise and airflow. At the lower airflow rate, temperature rise will be high but at the expense of lower air volumes, and vice versa.

A south facing wall will be more efficient, although any orientation between east and west is suitable. If a south facing wall is not available, then consider either or both east and west walls.

Components and Options

The components of the system may vary, depending on the ventilation and aesthetics of the building. In conjunction with a centralized HVAC system, our solar air systems may operate simply as a pre-heater of the incoming fresh air for commercial or institutional applications. Within an industrial setting, the system may serve as a preheater or used for direct ventilation.

All systems typically include our perforated cladding. Additional equipment may include high static pressure axial or centrifugal intake fans, fabric or metal perforated distribution duct, and bypass dampers for summer operation. As well, timers and or controls to interlock the intake fans with new or existing plant exhaust fans may be installed for balanced operation.

The style and configuration of the solar heating system may also take on many forms limited only by the imagination of the system designer, building or mechanical engineer, or architect. The perforated cladding may be designed and mounted in many ways, depending on the volume of air needed, obstructions and budget.

A south facing wall will be more efficient, although any orientation between east and west is suitable. If a south facing wall is not available, then consider either or both east and west walls.
